Cape Cod and the Islands.... just those few words and for most of us New Englanders our minds instantly go to post-card worthy images of sandy beaches, clam bakes, ferry boats, and all the glory that is a summer by the sea. For most, Cape Cod and its surrounding island getaways are reserved for the lazy days of summer. But there is one time of year that still rings truly special on one of the truly special islands off the New England coast-- Christmas on Nantucket! Come December, this tiny island may be slightly less full of tourists and vacationing residents, but that doesn't deter the charming town from pulling out all the stops for the holidays.
Beginning with the Christmas stroll the first weekend of December, Nantucket becomes a center for an old-world Christmas experience. The cobblestone streets in the island's main center are lined with uniquely decorated Christmas trees outside of every store front. Thousands of Christmas lights are strung around town, adding an extra level of charm to the wood-shingled buildings that make Nantucket so unique. Carolers dressed in period clothing set the tone of the weekend, and the Town Crier-- yes Nantucket has an official Town Crier!-- escorts Santa and Mrs. Claus up Main Street after their exciting ride into town via coast guard vessel. For the kids, there is an abundance of candy and hot chocolate handed out by local retailers. And for the adults, no visit to Nantucket is complete without a visit to the Cisco Brewery at Bartlett Farm. Here you can purchase local drinks like the Madaket Mystery from the 888 Distillery, a glass of local wine from Nantucket Vineyard, or a rich holiday brew (the "Santa's Beered") from the brewery, all to be enjoyed while listening to live music and making new friends around the bon-fire.

The holiday season continues through the New Year, with an adundance of Christmas celebrations until things quiet down in preparation for the remainder of the winter months. But until those few months finally arrive, Nantucket does not disappoint with their sense of holiday spirit! With so many idyllic hotels and beach-front locations, like the White Elephant and Wauwinet Inns, make sure not to miss your chance of experiencing Nantucket not just during the summer, but for your next holiday getaway.
