Dear Donna: Should I have a Wedding Website?

weddingwebsite.jpg

Dear Donna,

I'm stressed out about my wedding website! I see a lot of free sites to help me make our wedding website but I don't want to have a lot of advertising and un-necessary clutter on the site. Is it necessary to have a website and how can I do one myself? (Or where can I go if I don't want to do it myself?)

Please help me,
Caught in a Web

Dear C.I.A.W.:

Oh do we understand your plight! Your question has two important parts and we want to address them both!

1) Do I need a Wedding Website?

A wedding website is such an important tool in your wedding planning, ESPECIALLY if you are planning a destination wedding or doing a lot of pieces yourself. MOST of your guests can access your website (or if they don't know how to turn on a computer, they know someone who does and will help them out). We have seen wedding websites replace informational cards that were typically included in the wedding invitation suite. Let's face it, sometimes there is more information than can fit on a nice 5" x 7" card and having a website allows you the freedom to write more and be clear.

It also is a great place to put information about your wedding registry. It is considered taboo and in poor taste to include any written information in your wedding invitation about your registry. (It's like saying, "Give me a gift!") But the wedding website is a more "gentle" approach to informing your guests without offending Emily Post.

My last point about a wedding website is that things change. Sometimes, you have last minute changes due to weather or something else and how do you let all your guests know? By writing the change on the website! It's faster than the Post Offive and cheaper than FedEx.

We think these are three GREAT reasons to have a wedding website. About 90% of our clients one.

2) How do I create a website?

Creating a website is not always easy and using a "free" site isn't always free, is it? Sometimes they are bogged down with advertising and other pieces that you don't need or want but are forced to use them.

Well, we have a perfect solution to your problem if you can spend some time to DIY your own website: SQUARESPACE.COM!
